What is aac?

augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)

AAC Services

At ImpAACt, we are dedicated to supporting individuals, families, and schools in enhancing communication. Our services include facilitating the acquisition of communication devices and providing comprehensive training and technical assistance. We strive to empower our clients, ensuring their continued success in various settings such as home, school, or the community.

Funding sources for devices, therapies, and AT/AAC services may differ. We can help you navigate the funding process.

AUGMENTATIVE AND ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION (AAC) EVALUATION

AAC evaluations are available for children and adults with complex communication needs who want to obtain a personal speech-generating device.

This service includes:

  • consultation
  • acquisition of trial device(s)
  • initial device setup
  • 2-hour training for client and caregiver(s)
  • assistance with the securement of funding for SGD

Funding sources for speech-generating devices (SGD) are:

  • Medicaid/Medicare
  • private insurance
  • private pay
  • charitable organizations

If an SGD is not a covered benefit, alternate funding sources will need to be explored.

AUGMENTATIVE AND ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION (AAC) CONSULTATION

AAC consultative services can be used to target a specific need or challenge. Consultation is provided to educators, family members, or caregivers and is focused on specific questions and goals. This service may include a review of communication systems currently in place, an informal exploration of alternative communication solutions, or device-specific training and troubleshooting.

AAC Speech/Language Therapy

AAC speech/language services are available for those individuals of all ages - children and adults - needing targeted treatment to improve communicative intent and independence when utilizing an AAC device.  There is no age limit or qualifications necessary for utilizing AAC.  Early intervention should be considered for any child when his/her speech output is not adequate to communicate everything that they want/needs to communicate.

Note: We are currently scheduling clients for therapy on Saturdays only.

Technical Assistance

Technical assistance services can be provided as:

  • training client, family, or caregiver (if needed) on the use of the AAC device
  • configuring devices and software to user's needs and preferences
  • document review (evaluations, accomodations, IEP's, etc.)
  • attend IEP meetings (in-person or virtual)
